Welcome to the New Term

A warm welcome back to the Autumn term and to all our new children and to our new staff members: Ms Prentice, Year 4 Class teacher and our new Deputy Head. Mrs Dean, Year 1 Class teacher and Mrs Baxter, TA in Year 3 class.

We hope you have had a wonderful Summer break.   We have lots of good news to report:

Congratulations to St. Michael’s Pre-school who received “Outstanding” in their recent Ofsted conducted last term. This is a fantastic achievement for Debbie May and her team.  Well done.

During the holidays we had new internal doors replaced throughout, and the school looks like new. It has made a real difference.  In addition the Ladies Cloakroom has been refurbished.

Parents may have noticed the superb Astro-turf surface laid outside Year 3 classroom. This will provide a safe environment for play and sport and our very grateful thanks go to Mr Corke who spent many hours of hard labour fitting this for us.  Thank you also to the Friends for the funding of this.  We hope it is admired and appreciated by all.

We look forward to welcoming new prospective parents to look around our school for the Primary Admissions intake for September 2017.

Please contact the school office to make an appointment.

Greetings from Mr Mallon

Christmas bell with holly

On behalf of the teachers, pupils, parents and governors of St Michael's School I would like to extend my best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous Christmas and New Year to all the local community. We have had an extremely busy last couple of months at school with many highlights. Our Remembrance Service held in school was beautifully observed and, through the generosity of our parents, raised £360 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Our newly formed School Choir performed a selection of Christmas Carols to the residents of Knebworth Care Home and Monread Lodge. Our Christmas Bazaar was a resounding success and raised money to refurbish our Millennium Triangle play area for the children to enjoy in years to come. Our Reception and KS1 children performed their Nativity at the Village Hall and our KS2 children held a Carol Concert at St Michael's Church. On the Sports front, Mrs Deane ran a skipping challenge for Years 3-6, with the overall winner being asher Garnham, who skipped an incredible 186 times in one minute! Finally St Michael's School has been nominated for 'School of the Year' in the pretigious Hertfordshire Service to Sports Awards ceremony at the University of Hertfordshire. The School Games Organiser chose us ahead of all the primary schools in Welwyn and Hatfield, and we are up against the top ten schools in the county, which is a massive achievement. I will keep you posted of how we do in the next newsletter. I am really looking forward to the year ahead and sharing all the achievements and successes of St Michael's with you all. Mr Mallon (Head Teacher).

Head Teacher's half term news

We have had such a busy and richly rewarding half-term and the past seven weeks have flown by. We have recently had our Harvest Festival at St Michael's Church led by the Year 5 children. It was Lucy's farewell service and we wish her well in her new Parish of Elstree. The Year 6 children distributed parcels to the residents of Wickfield Close and were extremely well-mannered and well-behaved as always. Other highlights included our Book Fayre which raised £300 in commission, and enabled us to stock up on class books.

Our "Wow" writing day featured an Epic Citadel, and the writing produced by all classes was fantastic. Year 3 enjoyed their trip to Celtic Harmony dressed as Celts and learned a great deal. A former pupil helped organise a cake sale to raise money for Willow Foundation and raised £120.

On the sports front our netball team have won all four of their matches and our football team have won both their games including a resounding 4-1 victory over Welwyn St Mary's. Key Stage 2 classes have competed in a number of sports events including 3 Tag Rugby festivals, Year 5 football tournament, a Running Festival, Year 3 multi-sports event and Badminton coaching at Gosling, and a Year 6 netball tournament. Year 6 have also been swimming every Friday. Our final event in October was a pumpkin carving competition and a coffee morning for parents who joined the school in September.

I hope the children, parents and staff have a well-earned rest and I look foward to an equally busy and exciting second half-term. Mr Mallon, Head Teacher.

P.E. Kit

For Physical Education, children are required to wear the school’s white t-shirt with logo and navy PE shorts.
In sunny weather a school sun hat is required.   These are available from the School Shop.
Plain black plimsolls are required, preferably with fastenings which your child can manage independently or trainers are acceptable.

We do not allow jewellery in school as it can be a source of danger in P.E. and swimming. Pierced ears should have a stud only. (Earrings have to be removed during P.E. and swimming lessons). Children with long hair should have it tied back.
