School Games

SG logo

In January of this year St Michael's launched a new School Games page. The School Games is a 'community' supported by many partners including The Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England, Department for Education, Department of Health, Paralympics GB and the Youth Sport Trust. More than £100 million of Lottery and Government funding is being invested in the School Games over the next three years. At the heart of the School Games is the understanding that competitive sport needs to be made accessible and enjoyable for all young people. The School Games also presents some excellent opportunities for young people to become sports reporters, leaders, officials and volunteers. In 2012 The School Games Mark was launched to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community via club links. Schools are assessed across bronze, silver and gold levels of the Mark, each of which require the school to meet a set criteria. St Michael's has been awarded a silver Mark, and is striving towards gold. By setting up our page in January this year we can now deliver sports information such as fixtures, results, blogs and photographs, providing a fast and effective link to parents of children who have taken part in sporting activities for their school. Please follow the link on the homepage of this website to take you to the St Michael's School Games Page (or else go to and search for our page using the school postcode -SG3 6JP). As of this week Mrs Deane has linked the School Games page to the St Michael's sports Twitter feed, so those of you who already use Twitter may find it easier to access our school's sporting information by logging in to Twitter using your own password and following StMichaelsScho2.

The team was captained by Jonathan Whiteway and we had two boys who made their debuts for the first team. Tom Cox was excellent in goal and pulled off an incredible penalty save in the first match. The local press were invited to take photos of the event so look out for some action shots in this week’s paper. Team sheet: Tom Cox, Dylan Dhesi, George Harris, Dylan Taylor, Ieuan Bryant-Fowler, Jonathan Whiteway, Billy Currell and Harry Phillips.

Indoor Athletics District Event Success

As the St Michael's boys and girls indoor athletics teams both qualified for the District competition, they travelled by mini-bus to Sir Fred's school on Thursday 4th February 2016.

The teams represented Monks Walk family against seven other area teams. The children had been training hard and practicing regularly in preparation for the harder competition.

Individual results are yet to be received but notable outstanding performances were:

  • 1st place for the boys under/over relay,
  • Elliot C, Iuean and Jonathan W's baton changeovers,
  • Maya's 70 in 30secs speedbounce and 12m javelin throw.

Every competitor fought hard for the best result in their events and with great anticipation the results were announced. Unfortunately the girls were pipped with the top three schools being Oak View, St Mary's and winners Applecroft. Then the boys results were announced, and after a very noisy hall all afternoon, there was not a sound to be heard....

Third place - Applecroft (gasp!), second place - St Mary's (shock, gasp, hope...) and the winners ....ST MICHAEL'S!!!!! Raptuous applause.

The boys therefore go through to the County final at Wodon Park, Ware in March.

Skipping Results!

St Michael’s children took up the district challenge of how many skips can be done in 60 seconds. Over 80 children volunteered to take part from years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

The results of the top 10 skippers in each year and the top 10 skippers in the whole school are displayed on the Sports noticeboard in the main hall. The standard was amazingly high and if the top 10 skippers skipped for the same minute that would be 1364 skips in 60 seconds! This result is submitted to district and entered into the competition with all other primary schools – I’m sure St Michael’s will fair really well against the other schools. The top 3 boys and girls are:

Boys Girls
Name Year Score Name Year Score
Asher Garnham 6 187 Isabelle Whelan 4 151
Elliot Clifford 5 131 Leah Hardy 5 140
Jonathan Whiteway 6 130 Lola McGuinness 4 130

Well done to all the skippers who took part! Mrs Deane.
