Football and Netball news...

Football:

Well done to the team for representing St. Michael’s in the first 'fixtures night' of the year at Monks Walk. We played two matches on the astro turf pitch. The first against Holy Family ended in a 1-0 defeat. The second was a 1-0 victory against Oaklands in a nail biting penalty shoot- out.
The team spirit was excellent and all the boys gave 100% in terms of effort and application. Well done! Tom, Dylan, Elliot, Oliver, Philip, Charlie, Matthew and Thomas, and a big thank you to our drivers.

 

Netball:

Mrs Fincham led our Hi-5 Netball Team out at Stanborough School in three friendly fixtures against Watchlytes, Panshangar and Springmead. The girls performed really well drawing two and narrowly losing one. They all enjoyed the experience as they became more familiar with the rules and changes of position. Top scorer was Imogen and all the girls tried hard and equipped themselves very well. Well done! Leah, Tilly, Summer, Sophia, Imogen, Layla and Isabella.

Year 5 Running Festival

The annual running festival took place today at Monks Walk with all of Beech class taking part. Overall we finished 3rd in the boys' race and 3rd in the girls' race. Congratulations to Tabitha Greenwood and Mimi Lewis who both finished in the top ten and qualified to represent Monks Walk Family at the district championships at Stanborough Lakes on October 12th. We wish them both the very best of luck. Many thanks to Mrs Woods for organising the children, and well done to all the children for completing the course.

Welcome to the new Term

A warm welcome back to the Autumn term and to all our new children and to our new staff members: Ms Prentice, Year 4 Class teacher and our new Deputy Head. Mrs Dean, Year 1 Class teacher and Mrs Baxter, TA in Year 3 class.

We hope you have had a wonderful Summer break.   We have lots of good news to report:

Congratulations to St. Michael’s Pre-school who received “Outstanding” in their recent Ofsted conducted last term. This is a fantastic achievement for Debbie May and her team.  Well done.

During the holidays we had new internal doors replaced throughout, and the school looks like new. It has made a real difference.  In addition the Ladies Cloakroom has been refurbished. 

Parents may have noticed the superb Astro-turf surface laid outside Year 3 classroom. This will provide a safe environment for play and sport and our very grateful thanks go to Mr Corke who spent many hours of hard labour fitting this for us.  Thank you also to the Friends for the funding of this.  We hope it is admired and appreciated by all. 

We look forward to welcoming new prospective parents to look around our school for the Primary Admissions intake for September 2017.

Latest news from Chair of Governors

Both committees (LPP and FRC) and the Full Governing Body met at the end of the Summer term when the Head's Report to Governors and the School Self Evaluation were discussed and approved. Rachel Wadey presented to FGB a report on her work as SENCo, Sarah Holden as Inclusion TA, and the work of the class teachers. This included the current arrangements for inclusion of all children in the classroom setting.  The new Pupil Profiles are working well. Progress of our SEND pupils is good.
 
Neil Gammon has completed a review of Safeguarding.  No issues were raised
 
Our finances are in good shape, new admissions are up to 27 children, and a recent Health and Safety Audit conducted by County clearly showed that our premises are in very good condition and our Policies and procedures are sound . 
 
The SATs results continue to be analysed.  On a recent visit to school our Hertfordshire Improvement Partner congratulated us on these results and on our current progress data.  Both look healthy. Further analysis will inform the School Improvement Plan for next year.

The Governor's Review of the Year (2015-16) has been communicated to all Parents by Parentmail and is also on the website.
 
All that remains is for me to wish you all a very happy holiday and I look forward to meeting you again in the new school year.

School Choir to Perform...

It's Campfest time!

Fingers crossed for the weather next weekend. Everything is hotting up now for the annual St Michael's Campfest on Saturday 25th June - all systems go! Class Reps will be in the playground this week asking for your help setting up the stalls from 10am on Sat, and also to man the stalls throughout the festivities. Don't forget to book your camp night space for the evening - forms went home this week in bookbags. We look forward to seeing you all there on Saturday, and thank you in advance for all of your help. Loose Change Challenge!

History Day Success!

Key Stage 2 had a wonderful day on Monday 13th June as they went back in time to find out about the history of Woolmer Green and its surrounding area.  The children experienced and learnt about life in the Roman times, living as a highwayman / highwaywoman, what it was like in the trenches of World War One, and how it would have felt as an evacuee in World War 2. With the help of parents from the school, history was brought to life with costumes and original artifacts, as well as a special visit from Aunty Bel, who was evacuated during the war aged 5. Following the day, children will be writing about one of the eras in History, as well as completing a whole school timeline with KS1, showing key dates in history from when the school was first built. Many thanks to all the parents who gave up their time in order to make this a special day for the children, with special thanks to Mr Harris (George’s Dad in year 6), and Mrs Gloyn for organising the event.

Revd David Munchin rides for charity

Congratulations to David and his team for successfully cycling 990 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats in 8 days finishing on Sunday 29th May!

It helps people regardless of their religion, race or nationality. The Welwyn Team Churches are committed to raising £5000 by the end of 2017 in order to support the project detailed below. The Welwyn Festival

This year the Welwyn Festival is taking place from Friday 24th June to Sunday 3rd July. There will be lots of events for the local community aimed at raising money for local good causes. This year’s Welwyn Festival is number 42. As any fan of Douglas Adams and science fiction knows, that’s the answer to life, the universe and everything. So, this year’s Festival will have a space theme. This includes an admission-free presentation at 7.30pm on Friday 24th June at the Small Hall of the Civic Centre by local space expert, Jerry Stone FBIS – “Nell, Esther and Aunt Effie: The story of the world’s first liquid-fuelled rocket”. There will be plenty for all the family, including fun runs, a street market, The Welwyn Oscars, a street parade, a Roman day and a classic car display.Throughout Welwyn Week shops and businesses in the village will be taking part in the annual ‘Cuckoo in the Nest’ competition for children. Mystery objects will be in windows throughout the village and the challenge will be to identify those out of place – or the ‘cuckoos’. Loose Change Day

We have Loose Change day on Wednesday 15th June. We ask you to empty your jars of loose change, dig deep between the sofa cushions and bring all your coppers, silver and gold coins (Sterling) to school. Each class will have their coins counted and the winning class will be announced during Friday's assembly. There will be a prize for each child in the winning class. We are NOT collecting any foreign currency. The money received will go towards purchasing new netball kits for our team. The Friends have already secured sponsorship and donations from local companies which has allowed us to order new football and rugby kits. Thank you for your support. The Friends.

Tombola loose change Tent

To all parents and carers: The Friends have many exciting events coming up, and would like to give you the dates so that you can save them on your calendars...

Friday 27th May is mufti day, and we will be collecting sweets for the sweetie tombola.

Thursday 21st July is this year's leavers' disco at the village hall. This event is open to all pupils, including reception class. Details to follow.

Saturday 8th October the circus is coming to town (well actually the village hall!) 2-4.30pm. 

Finally, the Friends are using some of our funds to update the Millenium Triangle area in the playground. We are looking into laying Astro turf and creating more of a sensory, relaxing area for the children. I would also like to thank those parents who took time to express further comment. Many of the comments were positive and illustrate the hard work, commitment and skill that is evident on a day to day basis when visiting the school.  Some comments direct us towards areas for future development and going forward I can assure you that these will be carefully considered by The Finance and Resources Committee and when action points are planned they will be communicated to you via the monthly Newsletter.

Au Revoir Mrs Renouf!

On Friday the school bade Farewell to Mrs Renouf, at least for the timebeing, as she goes home to 'rest' for a couple of weeks before the birth of her first child. We would all like to send Charlotte and Dan our most sincere best wishes for a smooth delivery. There is a lot of excitement and deliberation in the school as to whether they will have a boy or a girl and we look forward with eager anticipation to hearing their good news in due course. To say our 'good-byes' the whole school gathered in the hall and each class presented Mrs Renouf with a handmade card, each of which had been put together by the whole class. Cherry Class stood at the front and read a few pages from Green Eggs & Ham (Dr Seuss), which is her favourite children's book. They had changed some of the words appropriately for the occasion. Au revoir Mrs R! Love and best wishes from all at St Michael's School.

Staff changes...

It's all happening this term; a welcome return, a sad departure, a happy departure (and hopefully eventual return!), and two fabulous new recruits!
We are so pleased to see Mr Mallon back from sick leave and our thanks go to Mrs Rawson who deputised in his absence. Mrs Rawson will sadly be leaving us at the end of this term to take up a new post at a school nearer her home. We are currently in the process of recruiting and will inform you of her replacement as soon as possible. We would like to express our thanks for all her hard work over the past 13 years and wish her every success in her new school. We also welcome two new members of temporary staff: Miss Thomson in Reception class working Thursday and Friday, and Mrs Bokmans in Year 2 who will be covering Mrs Renouf’s maternity leave. We hope they will find St. Michael’s school a wonderful place to teach. Mrs Renouf’s last day will be Friday 29th April, and we all wish her well with the birth of her first child. Watch this space!
